Strength Training vs. Speed & Agility: Why You Can’t Be Fast If You Are Weak

Every parent wants their kid to have that explosive, jaw-dropping second gear on the field or court. You want them to blow past defenders, change direction on a dime, and look effortlessly fast.

Naturally, when looking to gain a competitive edge, many parents search for local speed and agility classes. They picture their athlete dancing through agility ladders, weaving between plastic cones, and high-stepping over mini-hurdles.

It looks fast. It looks fancy. But if your athlete lacks foundational strength, those drills are almost entirely useless.

The cold, hard truth of sports science is simple: You cannot be fast if you are weak.

Here is why flashy footwork drills are failing your athlete, and how we do things differently right here in Mesa.

The Agility Ladder Deception

Agility ladders are the most overused, misunderstood tool in youth sports. They are great for teaching body awareness and coordination in young kids, but they do not make athletes faster.

Speed is not about how fast an athlete can twitch their feet in the air. Speed is about force production, or how much power an athlete can violently drive into the ground with every single stride.

The Physics of Speed:

Isaac Newton’s third law of motion dictates that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If an athlete wants to propel their body forward or change direction instantly, they have to push the earth away from them.

If your athlete is weak, they physically cannot put enough force into the ground to create explosive movement. An athlete can have the prettiest footwork on a plastic ladder, but the second they step onto a real field, a stronger, more powerful athlete will leave them in the dust every single time.

Cones don't make athletes fast; force does. And you build force through strength training.

Force Production: The Engine Behind the Sprint

Think of your athlete’s body like a sports car. Agility is the steering wheel and tires, but Strength is the V8 engine under the hood. You can have the most precise steering wheel in the world, but if your engine only has 50 horsepower, you aren't winning any races.

When an athlete builds lower-body strength through foundational movements like squats, deadlifts, and lunges, they are building a bigger engine. They are teaching their nervous system to recruit more muscle fibers instantly.

Once an athlete has that strength foundation, then they can apply it to sprint mechanics and deceleration drills. Suddenly, that newfound power translates into an explosive first step and a devastating change of direction.

The Choice is Yours: Speed, Strength, or Both

At Ignite Athletic Club, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all training. We know that different sports (and different athletes) have unique needs. That’s why inside our state-of-the-art indoor training facility in Mesa, AZ, we give our athletes the power to choose.

We offer distinct, specialized tracks designed to attack performance from every angle:

  • Speed & Agility Classes: Focused on turning that raw strength into elite field speed. Inside our climate-controlled indoor facility, athletes work on multidirectional speed, acceleration mechanics, and proper deceleration (learning how to slow down and cut safely without blowing out a knee).

Whether your athlete needs to pack on muscle and build a rock-solid foundation in our youth strength and conditioning classes, or fine-tune their linear speed and cutting mechanics in our speed sessions, we have the elite coaching staff and the elite environment to make it happen.
